Obituary for Thomas "Tom" Clarke

Thomas "Tom" Clarke
CLARKE, Thomas Harold
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Tom at his home surrounded by close family on September 23, 2018 at the age of 77 years. Tom was the youngest son of pharmacist Harold A. C. Clarke and his wife Margaret (Peggy) Clarke (nee Qua) of Welland, Ontario, and he was the younger brother of Edward (Ted) Clarke. Following graduations at Brock University and Althouse Teachers College at Queen’s University, Tom was a dedicated teacher at Cayuga Secondary School for over 35 years until his retirement. He was also a proud volunteer firefighter of the Haldimand County Fire Department - Station 12 Fisherville. At times Tom was also: a volunteer ambulance driver and first aid attendant; Treasurer of his local OSSTF teacher’s union; a member of the Niagara District Firefighters Assoc.; a member of Legal Aid Ontario’s local area appeals committee; a basketball coach; a softball coach; a hockey coach; and he was a strong local community contributor. Tom could always be counted on for his fun bad jokes and lengthy stories, but his company was always welcomed and warm. Tom appreciated the simple things in life and loved white milk, black coffee, sunshine, cheese-dream sandwiches, walks with his dog, and watching his kids and grandkids play hockey. Tom will be remembered most as a devoted and loving father who would do anything for his boys, and although he accomplished so much of which to be proud, his sons were his greatest source of pride and joy. Tom is survived and will be missed by his loving wife Faith Clarke (nee Matthews) and his four sons and their partners, Chris Clarke and Trish Clarke (nee Warden), Geoff Clarke and Amira Abouali, Brian Sherk and Emily Healy, and Brad Sherk and Lindsay Sherk (nee Hugenholtz); five grandchildren, Graeme, Brandt, Mackenzie, Robin and Martin; his ex-wife, Sheila Clarke (nee Rickard); and his many loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. On Oct. 13, 2018, visitation with the family will open at 10 AM at MILLER FUNERAL CHAPEL (28 Caithness St. E., Caledonia, Ontario) followed by a funeral service at 2 PM. An interment service will follow at Caledonia Cemetery prior to a celebration of life reception at the Royal Canadian Legion (29 Caithness St. E., Caledonia). In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations to the Saint Elizabeth Foundation (tel. 905-968-6516), which cared for Tom so dearly, or to the Ontario Lung Association (www.lungontario.ca).
